Shiseido Parlour traces its history back to the Soda Fountain that was opened in 1902 inside the Shiseido Pharmacy in Ginza, Tokyo, where the Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building now stands. The Soda Fountain became well-known for the manufacture and sales of soda water and ice cream.
Mr. Arinobu Fukuhara, the founder of Shiseido Co., Ltd., visited the U.S.A. on his way back from the 1900 Exposition in Paris. Based on his experience in the United States, he made the Soda Fountain as a part of the pharmacy’s premises, imitating an American drugstore of that era. His pursuit of authenticity was so serious that he used everything made in, and imported from, the U.S.A., ranging from machinery to glasses, from spoons to syrup. This attitude of pursuing new values, high quality, and authenticity has continued as the basic policy of the Shiseido Parlour until the present day.
